Art of Life, Koh samui, Thailand

Art of Life has been going from strength to strength since it opened its doors last year. Perhaps not surprisingly, as it's the first French seafood restaurant to set up on the island. And it's a great one. It oozes professionalism, and is exactly the kind of place you'd stumble across in coastal France, and be glad you did so.

Conveniently located in the heart of Fisherman's Village, it features a beautifully simple yet chic interior, which manages to be rustic and contemporary at one and the same time. It has sturdy wood tables, along with no-nonsense yet comfortable seating; it's sort of an update on a French country house. Everyone seems to enjoy the atmosphere. People come to eat, drink and chat with no standing on ceremony. Take a table that looks out onto the street outside, by the bar, from where you can see the chef at work, or for more privacy, head upstairs to the first floor.

The chef and the owner are both French, but the menu is entirely in English and easy to understand. Chef Christophe Scali was born and bred in that quintessential of sea-ports, Marseilles, and has worked in prestigious restaurants such as Le Relais des Gorges à Vinon-sur-Verdon and Romano in Cassis. He knows exactly what he's doing when it comes to dishes that exude Gallic appeal.

Naturally there's Bouillabaisse, sardines from the Mediterranean and a generous supply of oysters, with Fines de Claire, Marennes d'Oleron, Fines de David Hervé, as well as Harty Oysters from Ireland on the menu. In the mood for something else? No problem, as you can also dine on crab, shrimp, clams, king prawn, whelks, periwinkles and mussels. If you're coming to Art of Life as a couple, then you'll enjoy the seafood platters, which arrive at your table beautifully presented.

Other mains include Fish of the Day or Salmon Cooked on One Side with caramelised bok choy, citrus butter and asparagus. There are also two pasta linguini as well, continuing the Mediterranean theme.

The fish dishes are complemented by several meat choices, just in case you're not in the mood for seafood. The Lamb Shank 5 Hours is very popular, and is just what it purports to be; deliciously tender and traditional. You can also enjoy the Prime Ribs Côtes de Boeuf, a dish designed to be shared by two. Beef Filet Earth and Sea Style is an equally tempting option.

As we've said, the restaurant is French in all aspects, but there's one notable exception; you'll also find a selection of Thai dishes on the menu, with Blue Crab in Yellow Curry, Mixed Seafood Salad Thai-Style and Minced Beef in Tamarind Sauce. All these options are delicious and every bit as tasty as the French fare.

"... Art of Life offers exactly the kind of dishes
that send diners home happy."

Children also love coming here, and have their own special menu, comprising best-loved treats such as Fish and Chips, Pasta Bolognese and ice-cream.

Adults meanwhile will enjoy the range of wines, specially chosen to go with the dishes here, and a range of desserts to wind up a memorable meal. For a final treat, try the whole Saint Marcellin Cheese, another unexpected French tradition here on Samui.

Last but not least, if you really, really can't get to the restaurant, but are hankering after seafood, then opt for the delivery service which will speedily bring dishes to you in the Maenam, Bophut, Chaweng and Plai Laem areas. The service applies only to seafood platters and must be for a minimum of two people.

Art of Life offers exactly the kind of dishes that send diners home happy; with some of the great French classics, along with a great atmosphere, wonderful wines and the feeling you have when you know you're being well looked after.

If coming by car, take the first turning to the left as you head into the village from the traffic lights, and head for the car park, located in the first street to the left. The parking fee will be reimbursed.

Art of Life is open daily from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm.
