Coco Tam's X Peppina, Koh Samui, Thailand

It's just about perfect. In fact, it's the quintessential modern tropical island beach bar. In an idyllic location on a pristine white-sandy beach with tall coconut palms swaying in the breeze overhead, Coco Tam's has become THE place to spend a lazy afternoon and up-beat evening in Fisherman's Village. And now the owner has gone one stage further and opened an adjacent Italian restaurant – the extra-ordinary Coco Tam's X Peppina!.

And being a part of the renowned 'Peppina' brand, gives you the assurance that the Neapolitan Italian cuisine will be served 'just-right' every time, but we'll come back to the food in a minute. Beach restaurants just don't come better than this – anywhere – and that's a fact. And although it's a large 2-storey restaurant, it's completely open–sided, meaning that it fits perfectly into the tropical environment as it allows you to see through to the glistening blue ocean beyond as you're walking by – which you really shouldn't!

Spread expansively along the most scenic far-western end of the popular Fisherman's Village, Coco Tam's X Peppina has the ideal location to really appreciate Bophut Beach at its finest. Smart red brickwork, bamboo-lined ceilings, hanging lanterns, a delicatessen/open kitchen, a central bar and lots and lots of beautiful wood interspersed with numerous exiting design features create a 'oneof- a-kind' dining environment – an ideal spot for enjoying a laid-back lunch or an up-tempo dinner, alike.

Come along for lunch, when the restaurant opens at midday, and you can choose to sit inside the spacious 90-seater ground-floor (the beach terrace area is the most popular!), or even on the beach itself. The all-day menu has an excellent range of snacks and light dishes in addition to the dinner items so you don't have to over-indulge at lunchtime – although when you taste the food, you'll find it's hard not to!

Everything's been set up for hedonistic enjoyment, and being right by the sea only adds to the sense of delight. The beach here is more or less deserted, and there are plenty of small coves to explore. The water is shallow, making it one giant paddling pool, ideal for children.

Arrive after 3:00 pm and you'll find that the upstairs is now also open. And exciting it is there, too! It's mainly open-air (being wall-less and roof-less!) with funky green 'grass' flooring, sofas and comfy chairs, plus you can also dine up here. And for those of you who simply must have air-con, there's a beautiful fully-enclosed 'games' room at the far end. Wooden flooring, oak tables, red-brick arched windows and many favourite board-games are there for your pleasure. This lovely room is also an ideal venue for private parties and small functions and can be booked as such.

So now let's get back to the Italian cuisine on offer. And it most definitely is 'the real thing'. The menu is huge and offers just about every popular dish that you'd expect from a top-notch Italian restaurant specialising in Neapolitan fare – plus a whole lot more! Anti-pasta dishes abound and both the Chicken Liver Pate with pickled red onion, and the Burrata Caprese with its ripe beef, tomato seasoned with sea salt, black pepper, olive oil and balsamic vinegar topped with fresh basil, bottarga and burrata cheese and capers and served with a warm-bread basket are highly worthy of recommendation.

"...the ideal spot for enjoying a laid-back lunch
or an up-tempo dinner."

But a visit to Coco Tam's X Peppina wouldn't be complete without trying (at least) one of their sensational pizzas, and the best one to start with should be the restaurant's signature Coco Tam's Pizza. And that's a Neapolitan pizza topped with tomato sauce, garlic, oregano and mozzarella with added crudo ham, brushed burrata cheese, fresh basil and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil. Mmm – pizzas just don't get better than this beauty!

Also highly recommended are both the Pollo – grilled baby chicken, and the Spaghetti AOP Seafood with garlic, dried chili and parsley. In fact, whatever you choose at Coco Tam's X Peppina is sure to keep you a lot more than happy.

And you can round-off your Italian tropical beach dining experience with an authentic dessert, too. The most popular dishes being both the Panna Cotta with passion fruit, and Peppina's Tiramisu – for excellent reasons.

Like I said previously, the tempo picks up in the evening and every night there's an exciting fire show that starts around 9:30 pm. And if you like it really lively, then come along on a Monday or a Friday, when there's a live DJ from 8:30 pm which adds to the vibrant party-like atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else in Fisherman's Village.

Coco Tam's X Peppina has the perfect location, is a beautifully designed restaurant, has exceptionally friendly and helpful staff and serves fabulous Italian cuisine, and for those reasons, comes highly recommended.

The restaurant is open from 12:00 noon with the last food orders taken at 11:30 pm (last drink orders at 12:30 am).
