Poppies Restaurant, Koh Samui

One of the first ever international restaurants on Samui, it's still one of the foremost - a name that's become a symbol of excellence over its more than 20 years of operation. Poppies restaurant is a place apart. Located at the more tranquil southern end of Chaweng Beach, Poppies is one of Samui's finest boutique resorts, while the restaurant has an outstanding reputation for the finest international and Thai food.

Poppies is one of Samui's finest boutique resorts and being located at the quiet southern end of Chaweng Beach, spread between the Beach Road and the sea, means that it's easy to get to but well away from all the hustle-and-bustle of the centre of town itself. And the unique dining experience at Poppies starts well before you reach the restaurant!

Make your way to the restaurant through some of Samui's lushest gardens, which feature wooden bridges, carp-filled ponds and winding paths that might have stepped out of a fairy tale. If that's not memorable enough, how about a secret passage? It's open only at dinner times; simply ask the reception staff and they'll lead you towards an anonymous wooden door. It's the entrance to a tiny room with a bookcase that rolls back to reveal a hidden passage that traverses the entire length of Poppies. You'll be met along the way by a chef bearing an amuse-bouche, a great way to start an evening at Poppies.

Choose to sit in a traditional Burmese-style teak pavilion or just adjacent, in a large beachside sala, or the terrace overlooking the bay. Tropical restaurant settings don't come any more idyllic than this – but the real reason why Poppies always impresses is the food. And this has a lot to do with the skills of their two executive chefs. Firstly, there's the executive chef for Thai cuisine, Khun Wantanee, who's been at Poppies since the day it opened, and her counterpart for the international side, Khun Noi, here at Poppies for 20 years.

Come here for a long, lazy lunch and treat yourself to favourites such as Thai curries, or on the European side, pasta, burgers and sandwiches, and plenty of lighter mains. Or work up an appetite for a gourmet dinner, featuring an array of delights from the freshest line-caught fish to the most succulent of Australian steaks.

Alongside the atmospheric ambience of Poppies you can indulge in one of the most traditional Thai ways for family or friends to eat together. Poppies recreates the experience of kantoke dinners, set meals that are served on old-style rattan trays. The tray contains ceramic pots inside each of which is a separate, delicious small course. The menu lists five different variations to choose from here. A further set meal is a three-tier delight served on a traditional wooden set of stacked trays. You'll find a meld of Thai and international fare that's been lovingly put together and will please everyone's tastes.

Every Saturday everyone's welcome to attend Poppies' 'Thai Night', with a traditional orchestra of bamboo instruments and Thai dancing as well as local artisans displaying crafted goods.

Let yourself be pampered by some of Samui's most devoted waiting staff. Everybody here does their utmost to ensure you have a perfect time, and that's one of the reasons why so many people return here. Poppies is definitely a holiday fixture when it comes to eating in style and enjoying a wonderful ambience.

Poppies is open for lunch from 12:00 noon and for dinner from 6:00 pm. For reservations and further information, telephone 0 7742 2419
