Something For Everyone

Occasionally, you'll find a restaurant that really does offer the lot. A place that's as ideal for couples wanting to enjoy 'special' moments of romantic gastronomic pleasure as it is with families with children wishing to have a fun and exciting 'Samui dining experience'. Oh, and they're also a place where the cuisine is not just 'good', but totally outstanding and at reasonable prices. Introducing Samui Seafood!

It's located on the northern end of Chaweng Beach Road, opposite the landmark Muang Samui Spa Resort, and you won't be able to miss it, especially at night when the beautiful atmospheric lighting illuminates a truly magical Oriental scene.

And as you make your way along the grass-bordered pathway around the boat you'll find yourself in what appears to be a miniature fishing village – with a multitude of seating options. Sit outside under the stars in the expansive garden area, complete with palm trees and tropical vegetation, or cross over a rustic wooden bridge which spans a beautiful lily-pond that's teeming with fish and head towards the inside of the thatched-roof restaurant.

All-in-all, there's seating for 150 diners at Samui Seafood – 120 indoor and 30 outside – with intimate tables for two tucked away in private corners and larger tables for groups and families (there's even a well-equipped children's playground near the back where kids can play and have fun in a controlled and safe environment).

Now onto the food, and it must be said that the large á la carte menu really does offer something for everyone (there're photographs of every dish which makes things easy and avoids confusion). And although it features seafood (as to be expected from a restaurant with the name 'Samui Seafood'!), there are also full International (with imported meats for steaks, etc.) and Thai selections.

As for recommendations, well, from the starters' section the Samui Seafood Quartet is a sure bet. Its unique selection of seafood appetizers, including fresh prawns, sesame-encrusted squid rings, a fresh oyster wrapped in smoked salmon, a grilled seafood skewer on lemon grass and a golden fried rock lobster tail is guaranteed to win you over, as is the tropical-sounding Coconut Seafood Salad – an assortment of seafood blended with fresh young coconut and served in a coconut half, accompanied by garlic crostini.

Staying with seafood recommendations for the main course too, firstly there's the Fresh King Prawns or Lobster simmered in a traditional white wine and sherry wine sauce and oven-baked with freshly grated parmesan cheese served with buttered vegetable rice. And then there's the 'Star of The Show', the ever-popular Samui Seafood Mixed Grill which is a magnificent selection of red snapper, salmon, snow fish and sea bass with a lemon grass prawn skewer, all sprinkled with special seasoning on a bed of crisp potato crêpes and accompanied by garlic and basilflavoured diced tomatoes and herbed hollandaise sauce.

"...and then there's the ever-popular Samui Seafood Mixed Grill."

In case you were wondering, there's no seafood involvement in the desserts (!), but what you will find are many superb treats, and they include a super-tasty Traditional Tiramisu, with layers of fluffy espresso biscuits and creamy mascarpone mousse lightly flavored with coffee liqueur served with vanilla and strawberry sauces, and also a rich Dark Chocolate Mousse, flavoured with grand Marnier, sprinkled with roasted almonds and served in a crisp pastry basket with flamed dark cherries and assorted sweet sauces. Mmm, delicious!

And it's no accident that the food at Samui Seafood is so very special. That's because it's all in the hands of the highly-experienced Executive Chef – Manfred Alexander Kurz. During his extensive career, he's been with various top hotels in Europe, the Caribbean and Asia (cooking for various royalty and heads of states along the way), with the last 26 years being spent in Thailand, mainly here on Samui.

He developed his own style in cooking and firmly believes in "the timeless art of traditional cooking with original flavours prepared in a healthy and nutritious fashion and presented with a modern flair." And that becomes very evident the minute you start eating his food!

And finally, on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 pm there's traditional Thai dancing and live music which gives you a chance to totally absorb the local culture.

Yes, Samui Seafood really does offer the lot – and provides it in great style.

The restaurant is open from 12:00 noon for lunch
and from 6:00 pm for dinner.
