Things are definitely hotting up in Lamai! And although a temperature of 70° Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) isn't exactly warm enough to burst any thermometers, its newly-opened namesake restaurant is right up there pushing the gauge to the limit when it comes to providing a top-notch dining experience in the heart of Samui's second largest holiday destination.

Located in the exact centre of Lamai Beach Road, Seventy Fahrenheit couldn't be easier to find. And this position makes it the ideal spot to watch the passing throngs of passers-by that are hopping from shop-to-shop and from bar-to-bar. Especially as the restaurant is up a couple of steps from the pavement, giving it a slightly elevated viewpoint.

And street restaurants don't come much more vibrant and attractive than Seventy Fahrenheit. Step up onto the outside wooden decking and you'll see two lovely palm trees in the middle, perhaps Lamai Town's last remaining couple! On either side, the walls are formed by banks of greenery in the form of plants and in this outside area there's spacious seating for 24 diners at both the standard tables and the unique raised ones at the back. Ever-changing colour LED lights combine with subtle spotlighting and small candles on every table to provide the perfect balance of illumination. And don't worry that you might have to go indoors if it's raining – there's a purpose-built white awning that slides across the whole terrace if needs be so you can stay just where you are!

Dining inside is a joy in itself too, with its smart grey, white with a dash of red here-and-there colour scheme, air-conditioning and, again, spacious and comfortable seating for a further 30 diners. In fact, it's most popular place to be in the daytime when the lovely cool air provides the perfect environment to chill-out, catch your breath and have a lovely relaxed lunch.

Seventy Fahrenheit is owned by a charming Frenchman, Romain Benoist, who also owns the renowned Beluga Boutique Hotel at the nearby Hin-Ta Hin-Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks) landmark, so it's no surprise that the French-Mediterranean cuisine on the menu is as authentic as it comes!

But there's also an exciting Thai cuisine menu too, making this restaurant a perfect place to head for to keep all palates happy. Here are some recommendations, firstly from the Thai menu.

Unsurprisingly, the most popular Thai starter is the Assortment Platter, as it gives you a chance to sample many Thai delights in one go, namely: chicken satays, fresh prawn spring rolls, Thai fish cakes and deep-fried vegetable spring rolls. And the Duck Yellow Curry is a very recommendable main dish as it's mild enough for most people but tasty enough for everyone with its delicious duck breast and vegetables in a creamy coconut sauce.

And now we come to the French-Mediterranean part of the menu, and a great way to start off is with the fabulous Blue Crab Ravioli with leak and cream. Follow that with the wonderful Mediterranean Aïoli, which comprises white fish, steamed vegetables and a superb garlic mayonnaise, and you won't go far wrong.

"... and the prices at Seventy Fahrenheit are extremely reasonable."

Finally, we have dessert, and if you've gone for the Thai cuisine, then you may wish to stay there and try the famous Fresh Mango with Sticky Rice and coconut sorbet – you won't regret it! However, you may wish to switch cuisines at this point and select the Chef Profiterole (for two), comprising two chou with vanilla bourbon ice-cream, whipped cream and hot chocolate (60%) on top. It might add an inch or two to your waistline – but it will be worth it!

There's a good selection of excellent wines on offer here, including some great champagnes that are also available in mini 20cc bottles. Perfect for toasting occasions without having to consume a whole bottle of the bubbles!

Two more very important facts must be mentioned before closing. Firstly, the staff here really are second to none as Romain has trained them perfectly in the fine art of friendly-yet-professional service. And secondly, one particular expectation you may have when you see this lovely restaurant will turn out to be completely wrong. The prices at Seventy Fahrenheit are extremely reasonable and when you check the bill you'll be wondering if they included all the items on it!

Seventy Fahrenheit is open from 2:00 pm until midnight with the kitchen closing at 10:30 pm. For reservations and further information, telephone 0 954 199 070.
