The Jungle Club,Koh Samui, Thailand

Welcome to one of Samui's most striking and sought-out places to eat. The Jungle Club has probably the highest location of any restaurant on the island, and commands mesmerizing views of the coast. Whenever you come, be prepared to spend some time taking in the vista below. By day it's filled with hazy, pastel colours of the sea, while nights are glittering, and not just with stars. When darkness falls, the hundreds of lights of Chaweng speckle the coast below.

Already popular with Thais and island expatriates, the restaurant has recently undergone a transformation, with a brand new menu and new chef. This has seen the restaurant morph into a gastronomic destination offering an entire spectrum of cuisine: casual fine dining, international favourites and sumptuous Thai treats. And each of those categories has temptations that are hard to resist.

All of this has been due to the vision of its owners and Chef Wally, who is the culinary star here. Having already spent almost 20 years on Samui, working in top restaurants and 5-star hotels, as well as opening his own restaurant, he seems to collect fans wherever he plies his trade. The hallmarks of his dishes are creativity, simplicity and sheer good taste. You'll find there's nothing pretentious or eyebrow-raising about them. But you can definitely expect to be wowed.

Underpinning everything is his love of home-grown food, a passion that he's been cultivating for some years now. He and the owners are developing a farm which is already providing a host of chemical-free vegetables and herbs, all of which are much appreciated by the diners here.

Begin with yummy starters, of which there are over a dozen. Stand-out dishes here include the excellent Salmon, Red Snapper and Scallop Carpaccio with lemongrass and truffle drops, while totally different tastes can be discovered with the Belgian-style Cheese Croquettes, a duo filled with parmesan, gorgonzola, gruyère and fontina. Salads vary from a simple, highly pleasing green salad to an unexpected Quinoa Tabbouleh, a rework of the popular Moroccan dish.

There are also sandwiches, hot Italian Panini and a wealth of pizzas and pasta. You can also enjoy soups such as lobster, pumpkin and hazelnut and the filling Fisherman's Soup. The trio of Wood Platters are popular too. Each comes laden with a gastronome's dream of finger foods, too good to resist. Opt for Italian cold cuts, Thai Issan or Middle-Eastern.

The dozen international main courses are certainly too scrumptious to miss out on. Think slow-cooked Argentinian beef cheeks, Wagyu beef tenderloin, Australian rib-eye and freshly-caught red snapper steak or salmon trout. In addition, Chef Wally always looks for fish that hasn't been farmed. Then there are Thai mains such as the epicurean Massaman Kai – chicken massaman curry, Plaa Makham – whole white snapper with tamarind and Gaeng Paa Ped – jungle curry with duck.

For desserts you could willingly settle for scoops of moreish Italian icecream, but you might not be able to resist the temptation of the other options. The simply named Chocolate Lovers is a world of seduction in itself: black and white chocolate mousse vies with chocolate fondant, pistachio ganache, speculoos ice-cream, meringue and warm Belgian chocolate.

"... this is one restaurant where the food, service, setting,
atmosphere and even music all get top marks."

You might think that given the 5-star food that the prices are on par. Here's the surprise: they're not. Instead they're very affordable. The owners, along with Chef Wally, wanted the restaurant to be a place you could enjoy coming to without worrying about the bill at the end.

They've succeeded. More than that - this is one restaurant where the food, service, setting, atmosphere and even music all get top marks. Few restaurants get the entire combination right, but The Jungle Club does.

The restaurant is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for breakfast and then from 11:30 am until midnight (the kitchen closes at 10:00 pm). Reservations are highly recommended for dinner, as is taking the shuttle service from the bottom of the hill (driving by yourself is dangerous due to the steep road). They offer a free round trip after 7:00 pm, if going for dinner, with a charge of 200 baht per group at other times.
